WCCMT Organ Scholar
WILLIAM COLE CHURCH MUSIC TRUST
ST MARTIN’S CHURCH
DORKING
Anglicans and Methodists together
Organ Scholarship from September 2011
THE TRUST AND ITS WORK
The William Cole Church Music Trust is seeking to appoint an Organ Scholar. The Trust, which received its charitable status in 2007, is restricted to St Martin’s Church in Dorking and is committed to musical work amongst young organists and singers. Currently it is funding an Organ Scholarship and a Choral Scholar who would be expected to be entering Sixth Form education. Exceptional candidates of a younger age would be considered for this award. In September 2011, the Trust is looking to appoint a new scholar.
The Trust is working in conjunction with the Royal College of Organists for a trial period of three years. Dr William Cole, Organist and Choirmaster of St Martin’s Church Dorking from 1930 -1954, was Treasurer of the RCO for many years and President from 1970 — 1972. The William Cole Trust Organ Scholar will be automatically a student member of the College and will be given free tuition on suitable courses run under the auspices of the RCO Academy.
WHAT IS IN IT FOR ME?
· We will begin from where you are at present; we will go at your pace so that you grow in confidence. This scholarship should enable you to prepare for a similar award available in or attached to our many Further Education establishments in the UK.
· In your interview, we expect you play two contrasted pieces with which you feel comfortable. You would then be given sight reading and aural tests according to the level you have reached. To be fair, we would hope that you have reached a standard between Grades 5 and 6. It is not essential that you have taken the examination for these grades. Finally the panel, which will include members of the Trust and the Clergy, will sit you down for an informal chat.
· Duties? We acknowledge that young people in their mid teenage years need to hone their social skills. We do not expect you to be present at every Service or Rehearsal; you are guaranteed a complete weekend off per calendar month. Obviously there are important Festivals and Observances in the Churches’ Year when you would be expected to be present. If you are the successful candidate, we will agree a schedule of duties with you and your parents for the first year of the Award. You will get a period of Study Leave around the time of public examinations. When you have the confidence you may be happy to play for a Wedding or a Funeral which means extra money!!
·William Cole Organ Scholars are not expected to change teachers. However the Director of Music of St Martin’s Church will meet with you once a month to work through the current repertoire.
·When you feel comfortable, there will be opportunities to perform in our weekly recital series held at lunchtime on a Thursday in the winter months. You may feel that you would like to put on a concert —the opportunity is there for you to take.

·Your parents will be required to sign a contract with the Trust and there will be a review held in the summer of your first year. The Church would require your parents to sign a form of consent which is line with our Child Protection Policy. Trusts are not allowed to publish the amount of an award. We promise you that, depending on the scale of your duties, you will receive a generous sum of money which may help toward organ lessons – of course the money comes without strings attached!

MUSIC IN ST MARIN’S CHURCH DORKING
·The Choir of St Martin’s Church has a long history of excellence in performance stretching over a hundred and twenty five years under the direction of a succession of high profile choir trainers such as Dr William Cole (1930 – 1954) and the present Director of Music and Organist, Martin Ellis (1986 -). At present, when all members are present, there is a well balanced team consisting of five junior choristers and twenty seven adults including seven sopranos.
·Many of its members take part in other choirs such as the Dorking Camerata, the Goldsmith’s Choral Union and the Bach Choir. Several former junior choristers have entered the musical profession; others have made music an important part of daily living. Junior Choristers regularly take the RSCM Bronze and Silver awards.
·The Choir sings an anthem at Parish Communion or All Age Service every Sunday morning except in August; there is a musical Service on the first Sunday evening of the month, except in August, which usually takes the form of a fully Choral Evensong and the Festival of Lessons and Carols at Christmas is one the highlights of the Churches Year.
·In recent years the Choir has sung both the St Matthew and St John Passions by Bach on Palm Sunday. During the course of the academic year, 2009 — 2010, the Choir has sung Cantata 140 during Evensong on the first Sunday in December and a complete performance of Handel’s Messiah on Palm Sunday. Next July 2011, the Choir will sing Mendelssohn’s neglected oratorio St Paul. All these performances have been accompanied by orchestra.
·The Choir regularly sings Services in Cathedrals such as St Pauls, Southwark, Salisbury and Guildford; In 2010, the Choir returned to Salisbury in February, Southwark in April and will be singing Evensong at Guildford on 18 July. There are firm plans to visit Canterbury and St Pauls Cathedral as well as York Minster in 2011. The suitable candidate would be involved.
·The Choir has recorded for both BBC Songs of Praise and Sunday Half Hour programmes and made a CD in 2002 entitled Awake my lute. A further recording,Times and Seasons. will become available on 9 December 2010.
·The Organ has a considerable amount of pipework which dates from the original Elliot/Hill of 1831. It has been rebuilt by various firms but there is a definite imprint left by the 1894/1903 rebuild by Frederick Rothwell. Hill, Norman and Beard rebuilt the instrument in 1933, enclosing the Choir Organ, and again in 1986. It has three manuals and pedals and 45 speaking stops. There is a Steinway grand piano in the Church. The suitable candidate will be able to practice on both piano and organ free of charge but by arrangement with the Church Administrator.
Will you get any experience of Choir Training? Yes; under the direction of the Director of Music and Organist, you will be given opportunities to assist with the training of the Junior Choristers. Depending on your innate skills it may be possible for you to take all or part of a Full Choir Practice and to direct the music at Choral Evensong and during Choir Visits to Cathedrals.
